Struggle or a journaling app.

Writing things down helps many people. A journal and Struggle both start with your own words; they differ in what happens next.

If you’re in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. Neither option is an emergency service.

What a journal is good for

  • Paper or an app, written in your own time and read by nobody else unless you choose.
  • Good for getting things out of your head, keeping a record and rereading it months later.
  • Nobody answers. Some apps offer prompts; the next step is yours to work out.
  • Paper needs no account, no network and no subscription.

What Struggle is good for

  • A conversation, not a diary. You write or dictate what weighs on you, and it replies calmly.
  • A reply may ask one honest question, so the thought taking the most space can come out.
  • It can suggest one small step. You can save it and come back to it later.
  • Nothing to keep up and nothing that counts the days you skipped: coming back after a week is the same as coming back tomorrow.
  • Chat history stays on your iPhone. Settings in the app lets you export or delete your data.

The main difference

A journal keeps everything and answers nothing. Struggle answers, and keeps what you choose: the chat on your phone and the steps you save. If you want a record to reread in a year, a journal does that better. If you get stuck after the first sentence, a reply can help you go on.

Which one, when

  • You want a private record, with nobody answering: a journal.
  • You want a reply and one small next step: Struggle, on the App Store.
  • Both work together: write in your journal, and bring the part you’re stuck on to Struggle.
  • It has gone on for weeks, or you want treatment: a doctor, a therapist or a counsellor. Safety lists where to find human support.

Questions

Is Struggle a journaling app?

No. Struggle is a chat: you write, and it replies. It keeps your conversations on your iPhone so you can return to them, but it has no dated entries, mood ratings or charts.

Does Struggle track how often I write?

Nothing counts the days you skipped, and there is nothing to keep up. You come back when it helps.

Who can read what I write in Struggle?

Chat history stays on your iPhone and conversation transcripts are not stored in Struggle’s database. To reply, recent messages pass through Struggle’s server to an AI provider, as the privacy policy explains.
